Growing up in Jamaica, our home was filled with the aromas of herbs, roots, spices, and natural remedies carefully prepared by my mother — a woman whose knowledge of traditional healing surprised even her own siblings. She possessed an uncanny ability to understand which herbs to combine for almost any ailment, creating healthy concoctions rooted in generations of Caribbean wisdom and natural living.
Like many Jamaican households, coconut was a staple in our home. Whether for cooking, healing, nourishment, or homemade remedies, coconut milk was part of everyday life. And as the designated “graterer,” I spent countless hours preparing fresh coconut by hand, never realizing that those simple moments were quietly planting the seeds for a future vision.
No matter how unusual one of her natural remedies seemed, her favorite phrase never changed:
